Book jacket concept for The Unknown Sea: Navigating: Death, Dying, and Bereavement.

For this project, we worked with a professor at Chemeketa who is going to release a new psychology textbook. She asked for us to make it look more like a novel, and less like a boring textbook. Alongside this, she asked for us to avoid any death imagery and cliches since the book talks about all cultures and situations. With all these limitations, it took me a while to decide what to do with the design.

When I got to designing this cover, I decided it would be best to go more direct with the title of the book, with sea imagery. So I put the message in the bottle, to be an open ended interpretation of how grief can affect someone. Out of all my designs, this is the most open-ended one, as I think it best represents the book and its intended message.
